Hints & Tips

- The tastiest and most nutritious produce are best eaten when in season.

Produce in season for April: Asparagus; Artichoke; Beet; Citrus: Ruby Grapefruit & Blood Orange; Chard, Collard & Kale; Green Onion; Plum (just starting); Radish and Strawberry.

- All About Strawberries:

Commercially grown strawberries are one of the fruits most sprayed with pesticides, size enhancing drugs and chemical fertilizers. Use organic strawberries for a healthy treat.
v Strawberries are high in Vitamin C, Manganese and antioxidants. Choose berries that are firm, plump, with deep red color and green caps. Medium to small berries often have more flavor than the very large ones. Strawberries will not ripen once picked. Handle with care and refrigerate quickly after purchase as they are highly perishable.

To freeze strawberries, remove stem, cut large fruits in half if desired, wash and gently dry. Place the strawberries on a cookie sheet and freeze for a few hours. Remove from freezer, place in a tightly sealed container, label and freeze again immediately.
