Food buying clubs are about more than just saving money.

They are also about creating community. Food buying clubs first became popular in the 1970's for very much the same reasons people participate in them today. Many people want better quality and usually organically grown food, and better prices. Circumventing the supermarket and going directly to the wholesale distributor and the farmer are the best ways to do this.

A food buying club is an association of people who get together in order to purchase food and related goods. As a group, their purchasing power increases and allows them to access the wholesale marketplace, which is usually prohibited to individuals. Through a coordinator, members buy for their own consumption by placing pre-orders through wholesalers.

Most wholesale distributors deal in large volumes. Each one has its own unique policy and terms such as vendor permits, credit applications, terms of sale and other official documentation, as well as delivery requirements and ordering requirements.

Although there are many ways to operate a food buying club, most are organized through a coordinator or a cooperative. A coordinator is a person who takes the lead organizing the club, makes key decisions, and is responsible for most or all of the work, although some of the tasks may be delegated to the members. In a cooperative, members work together, each taking on a role and ensuring that all tasks are completed.

While participating in a buying club, discussions will center on the food, recipes are exchanged, unique products are discovered and health-related information is shared. Members learn from each other and share their own stories, thus a community is created.
